Commercial description: It belongs to the Bixa orellana L species. It is a small triangular- ovoid shaped grain, orange- reddish color. It is a good colorant for food for it can be used in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. Its chemical composition includes carotenoids: Bixin, norbixine, methyl-bixine, beta-carotene, criptoxantine, lutein and zeaxantin; Flavonoids: apigenin bisulphate, apigenin glucoside, hypolactin bisulphate, luteolin bisulphate, etc.; proteins, sugars, cellulose, greases, vitamin A, B y C; calcium, iron and phosphorus. It is produced in the tropical zones of Peru. After it is harvested it is disinfected and then classified and packed for export.
